| 内容記述 | 19 世紀に入って、リバプールは造船・港湾都市として急成長し、世紀中頃には、ロンドンに次ぐ国際貿易の拠点として栄えた。その繁栄の半面、アイルランドの大飢饉を逃れた難民が流れこんできた。彼らは地下室や袋小路の共同住宅に住み、劣悪な環境の中で悲惨な生活を送った。政治家であり資産家でもあったウィリアム・ラスボーンは貧民の救済に尽力した。彼は看護を専門職とする看護師を育成し、貧民家庭の病人を訪問させることを考えた。そのためのアドバイスをナイチンゲールに仰ぎ、指示に従って王立リバプール病院に看護師養成学校と看護師宿舎を創設した。さらに、彼は救貧院施療病院看護体制の改革にのりだし、ナイチンゲールの助力を得て、聖トマス病院ナイチンゲール学校の優秀な卒業生アグネス・ジョーンズを看護師長に迎えることができた。ナイチンゲールの最愛の教え子アグネスは貧民の看護に献身的に尽くし、人道の模範を示した。ナイチンゲール、ラスボーン、アグネスこの3 人を結び合わせたものは友愛と平等であり、貧民救済への熱意であった。その力は堕落した病院の看護体制を刷新したばかりでなく、貧困と退廃に満ちた社会に希望をもたらしたのである。看護が社会を向上させることのできた稀に見る例であった。 | |||||||||||||

| 内容記述 | In the mid of the 19th century, Liverpool rapidly grew up and thrived as an international trade and a harbor city. On the other hand there were a lot of poor low-wage workers coming from Scotland, Ireland and Africa. Almost all of the workers lived in the poor apartments around the harbor. Poverty was one of the serious social problems, but in 1846, Liverpool faced a more serious, terrible occurrence, because Great Famine which occurred in 1845 in Ireland pushed a great many starved. Irish people into Liverpool. When they came to Liverpool, they lived in the inferior environment such as 'cellars' or 'courts' on the dead-end streets. Although their living places became a plague spot, the poor people could neither receive any care nor enter the hospital. William Rathborn who was a rich and influential person, established the home-nursing care system and built the Nursing School and the Nursing Home under Nightingale's advice. Moreover, he set about the renovation o nursing-care system in Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary. With the help of Nightingale, Rathborn could meet 13 trained nurses including Agnes Jones whom Nightingale loved most. Agnes devoted herself to poor patients and set a model of humanity. What brought Nightingale, Rathborn, and Agnes together ware friendship and equality, and enthusiasm for relief of the poor. Their power did not only renovate the nursing system of the workhouse infirmary but also gave the hope to the society full of poverty and abolition. It was a rare example that nursing could improve the society. |
