Nightingale decided to follow a vocation in nuring. As a knowledge of medicine and develop nursing skills.\n  At that time, however, the profession of nursing was considered to be totally unsuitable for someone of F. Nightingale's social class and her mother and sister were totally opposed to her choice of chareer. She was so disappointed by their attitude that for while she contemplated suicide.\n  During that extremely difficult period of her life, F. Nightingale was fortunate to also be encouraged by certain visitors to Embley Park. Two of the visitors ware from the USA, Dr. Howe, a philanthropist and Dr. Blackwell, the first woman to be admitted as a doctor. She was also encouraged by two other visitors, Chevalier Bunsen and Mr. Herbert. Indeed, it was through Chevalier Bunsen's introduction that F. Nightingale was able to Kaiserworth, Germany in 1851 to study nursing at the Deaconess Institution.\n  In 1853, F. Nightingale returned to UK and on the recommendation of Mrs. Herbert took up the post of Lady Superintendent of the Upper Harley Street Establishment for Gentlewomen during Illness. It was during this appointment that F. Nightingale carried out a comprehensive reform of the management and nursing systems.\n  The confidence which G. Nightingale gained from these early appointments made her realise that she would be able to overcome the disapproval of her family and follow her vocation.\n  To develop a system of hospital nursing which took full advantage of newly discovered anaesthetics and awareness of the importance of sanitary conditions, which were introduced into the hospital in 1854, F.
