The analysis of 29 articles revealed that an SP is used for 1) skills training and 2) skills assessment most frequently in the context of in-school practice for 1st year and 2nd year students who have little or no on-the-job training. The major effect reported is that simulation using an SP can stimulate the students’ feelings greatly and change their attitude of learning. The quality of the feedback from the SP is considered to be most important because that is the key\nto cultivating the attitude in the students to put oneself in the patient’s shoes. The problems include a high cost for hiring a trained SP, much time needed for preparation and difficulty in securing a high-quality SP and good instructors. In addition, the standardization of an SP and the establishment of criteria are necessary for doing assessment.
